During a regular interview with Pooja Grover, a yoga instructor we got an interesting reply on one particular question. It was regarding benefits of yoga and her answer was that yoga helps make a connection. Appears to be logical. But there is a deeper meaning to it. Yoga now is no longer and exercise, it is revolution. Let us understand.
There are exhaustive articles and videos on the benefits of yoga. What is your take on the benefits of Yoga?
Yoga of course is most beneficial as a health exercise. It helps you to get inner peace and calm. But there is a different aspect of yoga which fascinates me.
When we look towards yoga beyond as just an exercise you will realise that it is actually a revolution in the making. Thanks to the push by Govt of India and all that public awareness has made people talk about it as a topic of interest. There are yoga groups, camps, social media events and all of a sudden it has become a daily discussion point.
So the biggest benefit of yoga is the connect you can have with other people. A person to person contact. As a yoga instructor I can connect with my students who in turn can connect with each other. The common thread is yoga. That is exactly what happens with yoga, you get a common discussion point. You can talk about the various positions, benefits, ways to improve and so on. These talks can go on endless and there is always something positive to talk about and something new to discover.
What is the relation between yoga and food?
Recently I had an interaction with Manju Mohan of Zing Life. She is a lifestyle expert and certified Metabolic Balance Consultant. While discussing with her about food and yoga she was worried about how we Indians has blindly adopted western and fad diets. At this rate we are forgetting our culture and adapting to something foreign.
If you want yoga to have the best effect on your body and mind, stick to traditional Indian food. Freshly procured, locally sourced and recently cooked. Do not over cook the vegetables, they will lose all nutrients due to heat. Avoid processed food as much as possible. In case of cooking oil, use cold pressed seed oil out of something which grows within 200 kms of where you live.
Finally do not use food to reward your brain. Do some activity or hobby or some kind of art activity to trigger the reward centres of your brain to keep yourself happy.
