Quilling – A therapeutic Art Form

quilling

Paper quilling, also known as paper filigree is an art form that has existed for a very long time. The teeny tine strips of paper are rolled, crimped, shredded and pinched to create amazing shapes. When they are glued together, they can form beautiful images. The art is not only visually appealing, it is said to be therapeutic. The art therapy is bound to improve fine motor skills and is sometimes used to improve concentration.

I have been quilling for the last 7 years and it has benefited me a lot. I have faced a lot of struggle in the initial days. The advantages are numerous. With experience I have been able to get better, but like any other art form, it requires dedication and hard work. Today when I do not pick up my needle to work, my mind weaves designs and I see paper colors in my dreams.

It is cost effective

Unlike other art supplies like scrap-booking, candle making, decoupage etc.; quilling supplies do not cost much. A pack of paper sheets, glue and a needle is all you need to start creating. It is once you improve then you can invest in other tools and more paper sheets. Initially you can even cut your own sheet that gives you more freedom to choose your project.

It develops motor skills

The repetitive rolling and holding the tool send a signal to the brain. It is similar to learning to write. With continuous practice and repetitive action, the signal that the fingers send to brain and the hand eye coordination is said to make the brain sharp and develop fine motor skills and aid cognitive development.

Improves concentration

In order to make similar designs and over and over again you need to be methodical and concentrate to get the best output. Quilling art helps in stimulating the right as well as left side of the brain. Thus helps in concentrating in every field in life.

Quilling has a calming effect

Just like the art of pottery, quilling helps to calm down the mind. The beautiful designs stimulates the brain in such a way that it can help in anxiety and nervousness. In some cases it is known to help Alzheimer’s and Autism.

Brilliant business opportunity

If you are serious about following this art, you can learn and improve and include a lot of different art forms to create a small business for yourself. Ranging from small earrings to creating picture frames, Quilling provides a vast range for showcasing your talent.
