Manju Mohan talks about Metabolic Syndrome and the power of right food

Before we start talking about food let me begin with myself. I am Manju Mohan. After completing my training as a dietician I setup a clinic under my brand Zing Life. Understanding the Metabolic Condition of any person, I can recommend a diet for reversing life threatening conditions.

Metabolic syndrome has gained a lot of attention in the last two decades. It is a group of conditions which can increase the risk of heart attack and type 2 diabetes. BP, Blood sugar, cholesterol, obesity or large waist line and uric acid are the conditions which a certified Metabolic Balance Consultant checks. Using blood reports and lab tests a custom diet is prepared.

What causes Metabolic Syndrome

One of the main reasons for developing one or more of these conditions is an unhealthy lifestyle. Processed food is bad for health but has entered into our life in a big way. Our whole day and a good part of the night runs on processed food. The second thing you need to worry about is the quality of processed food, most of which is made of low quality ingredients to keep the cost low so that it is affordable.

Street food is another reason for deteriorating health among the urban population. Most of the food on sale is carbs which are directly responsible for spikes in blood sugar and is one of the main causes for insulin resistance.

Obesity comes from a various factors but almost surely leads towards metabolic syndrome. Eating too much carbs and sugars esp liquid sugars will increase fat around waist. Other reasons are sedentary lifestyle and eating while stressed.

Finally stress is the most common reason for weight gain. Stress disrupts hormonal balance which leads to insulin resistance and weight gain follows. Stress factor is more pronounced in women.

Getting healthy

Getting a custom diet plan and sticking to it should usually do the trick. One of the most common and workable solution is doing the opposite of what you have been doing till now. One of the most powerful and potent food out there are Indian herbs. Here is a list of the most common herbs found in the market around you which should form part of your daily diet.

  • Coriander or Dhaniya plant
  • Mint or pudhina taken with lemonade without sugar
  • Methi plants
  • Palak or spinach
  • Mustard greens or saag

Nutrition is the best way to restore hormonal balance. Choose locally grown food which is freshly prepared. Include lots of vegetables in your daily diet. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking enough water daily.

Yoga is the best exercise aimed at stress busting. For more details on yoga please read this interview of Pooja Grover.
