Interview with Monica Bindra – Brand LAIQA

LAIQA

What is LAIQA all about?

A lot of gynecological problems faced by women are due to one reason-lack of awareness on menstrual hygiene. High plastic content in conventional pads give rise to UTIs and rashes. Chlorine used in pads (for bleaching purposes) can lead to ovarian cancer. Plastic content in commercially available sanitary pads also pollutes the environment. All these concerns led to the birth of brand LAIQA. LAIQA is not just about a skin friendly and Eco-friendly product.

It is an effort to create awareness about a natural process which creates life itself. It is a movement to make women feel confident to discuss about periods in the open. It is an endeavor to make the topic of menstrual hygiene a family discussion rather than limited to just women whispering. It is a contribution to make changes in the society, step by step.

How did this idea come about?

My inspiration has been my daughter. When I saw her facing menstrual issues it really hurt me and pushed me to look for a better alternative. I started discussing ideas with my friends and their daughters and soon realised that someone in almost every family faces the same issue. Determined to make a pad perfect in every way I worked tirelessly until I knew I had a product in hand that addressed all the issues we face with conventional pads. LAIQA is also committed to creating a positive difference in the lives of those who are usually left out of the picture –rural women. Through our “Buy one Donate one” scheme we try our best to help impoverished families and spread love through LAIQA.

What is this issue of Chlorine in Sanitary Pads?

Chlorine is a powerful bleaching agent- it gives the sanitary pad its distinct white colour. The issue with it is that the dioxins that are released during the bleaching process can in fact lead to ovarian cancer! I was shocked when I got to know this and realised that most women don’t even know that they are using pads that are potentially very dangerous to their health. I ensured that LAIQA pads were completely chlorine free because we care about our customers and hope to see a period of healthier menstruation going forward.

Why is plastic usage in sanitary pads a cause of concern?

Firstly, high plastic content in pads lead to rashes and allergies in women. It’s also a cause of increasing UTIs and various diseases.

Secondly, A woman might use up to 15 pads per month. Each pad itself is wrapped in plastic wrapper and additionally it comes in a plastic pack. Multiply this with 42 million urban women in India who use pads. Can you imagine the amount of plastic waste we generate through our disposal of sanitary napkins alone? We all know about the harmful effects of using excessive plastic and LAIQA has tried to address this concerning problem as well. As a small contribution back to the environment, our pads are wrapped in 100% biodegradable paper only. Instructions marked on the box are clear and pictorial for easy assimilation.

Where can I buy LAIQA products?

All major e-commerce platforms stock our products for pan India sale. In Delhi NCR we have tie ups with many pharmacies and retail shopping chains but you can also use our customer care number to order pads via a phone call or a simple message.

What are future plans for LAIQA?

It’s been motivating to see the overwhelming positive response we have received. It has allowed us to scale our production of sanitary pads but going forward we would like to have an ecosystem of products which women can use during their periods.

You mentioned overwhelming response? How did you go about designing the concept?

As I said earlier it was really about discussing issues with other people and seeing the common trends to know what he had to solve. In addition to talks with my own social circle we (including my partners Nazish, Ali & the team) also conducted extensive market research which included surveys over a diverse set of people.

Do you have any parting words?

I would just like to say that if you have a dream you are never too old to chase it. I’m glad I decided to start LAIQA as it has given me a sense of fulfillment like no other. My advice to all would be to take charge and follow your passion.
