Teaching is the most noble profession in India – Interview with Meena Kumar

We have been associated with Meena Kumar for the last three years. We are so fascinated by her abilities as an abacus and vedic maths teacher. Even though all these years we have been trying to decode the reasons for her success. But now it is time she answers these questions herself.

Why teaching?

In Indian culture a teacher is equated next to God. But I am not seeking divine status. I would like to rather be a messenger doing good work. I want to be part of the ecosystem that helps education.

I am not sure if I was looking for earning money or was passionate about teaching. Abacus and Vedic maths however is my main areas of interest. So all the things clicked together nicely.

Who says a teacher does not learn?

There is a common belief that a teacher need not study. That is not true in many cases. Take for example mine. I love to learn and explore new things. All my life I have been doing courses and learning new skills. There is no age for learning and as a teacher I believe that I should constantly update my teaching skills as well as range.

You need to be an astute business person

There is nothing wrong in being protective about your brand. After all you are in the market to earn money. Even though making money is not the only motive, you need to have a business plan in place. Life lesson, things do not go as per plan. So you need to plan for contingency and the expected lows you will get in business. Once a while life gets challenging. I had to relocated my academy. My journey began again with just one student.

I knew that I had the skills and training needed to succeed. But being human only means that I had to muster all my strength to be calm and patient. After a long wait, today I am on a steady path. Things are still not on track. But I know that I will prevail.
