Know how Dhrumi Sarvaiya recasts Interior Designing in a new mould

Interior Designer begins with an idea transformed to reality. It is a world of engineers, architects, contractors, workmen and an interior designer fitting in between. Can you explain your business model in detail?

I am an Interior Designer and my firm Arc Interiors provides design solutions to clients. Right now we are a team of 10 based in Ahmedabad, providing online 2D and 3D drawings. We primarily provide designs as soft copies, but recently we got the opportunity to complete an onsite work. We have already secured an online presence on Instagram. We are ready to expand our team and also our reach. Hiring a proper workspace is also on cards. Our designs are unique and creative. We are getting 4 to 5 enquiries daily. Once we build up our studio, we shall be able to provide complete end to end solutions.

Why not hire a building or construction contractor who will do the same work in lesser cost?

Agreed that the final work is build by the contractor, but he cannot work in isolation. What if the customer wants a specific design. Plus there are structural requirements, building codes, legal compliances and so on. Each professional has their role. An architect gives solutions to problems and similarly a contractor gets labour together to work ensuring the materials are correctly used and a few other things.

Interior Designers bring your ideas to life. We do sitting with the client and understand whats in their mind. That we convert into a visualisation, either 2D or 3D. This process is called rendering. With this the client see his or her ideas come on screen. That helps us to make final changes or finishing touches to the design. The autocad file is then handed over to the client.

How have you taken your business online?

Our forte is designing and our marketing strategy was word by mouth. Our online presence helped us reach out to a wider audience. Instagram is a powerful business platform. It helps you to create an online portfolio. If your content is unique, Instagram will automatically serve it to online visitors. We have also given a link to our website in the Instagram bio. That helps visitors to make a buying decision. People today make smart moves. If they need design ideas they go to Pinterest but if they want to choose an interior designer, they come to Instagram.

We have client meetings online by video chats. We even guide regarding what materials to use and how it will impact budget. Further we even provide consultancy of procuring materials and services. The final outcome is what was in your mind and within your budget. That is our promise. The complete process can be conducted online. Projects are completed in necessary timeframe too.

What is your source of inspiration?

I like to design and business is at my core. We Gujaratis have business in our blood. Entrepreneurship come next. Boys and girls get equal opportunity and encouragement. In this part of the country there are no restrictions on women. But more than that it is the support. Family and friends encourage me a lot. But the greatest of them all is my parents. It is their unconditional support that has got me going. Even when I was changing my profession, they supported me. That is what works more than anything else. You should be able to choose what you love to do. We are a hard working team and sky is the limit.
