Interview with Sakshi Garg – Calligrapher, Graphologist & Polyglot

Sakshi Garg

There are women among us who are on a path of daily achievement. Setting tasks for themselves, they have found a way to turn even routine into creative. Today we are in conversation with one such wonder who goes by the name Sakshi Garg.

I remember how I got acquainted to Calligraphy, it was suggested by my relatives to go to her niece as she was offering some artistic courses. Hence, my father and I went to enquire and I enrolled for the course in 2014. However, the decision was hard to go for, I dropped an year after my school because I couldn’t get admission in my preferred college of architecture. Honestly, I wanted to engage myself so thought to join some courses to nourish myself with skills. I also joined French course from Alliance Française de Delhi. Indeed, now I think that I made a good decision as it made my life eventful.

During the calligraphy course, I never thought of big, I was timid in nature and personality. I had that retro type perception of pursuing something as a PROFESSION. But YOU CHANGE ! And I changed too, I started teaching calligraphy through an academy across Delhi. During graduation (2016), I lost the essence with calligraphy and got engaged in language learning. In 2018, after completing graduation I enrolled to learn Spanish from Cervantes and Chinese from a known native. I cherish language learning because it gave me a whole new personality & a creative space in my mind.

So the reframing of my profession was done in June 2020 when I got a call from the mother of ex-student for calligraphy lessons (Tvishi), I used to give her handwriting lessons around 4 years back. Primarily, I wasn’t sure of giving online classes as offline classes weren’t possible due to pandemic lockdown. Thanks to her mother who motivated me to give it a shot as to see if it works or not, Voila, it did work. Tvishi and I started having an adorable bond that encouraged me to give her all of me. This 10 years old little girl plays a vital role in my journey of calligraphy because she returned me that confidence to be a calligrapher again. I still give her lessons though now she has become tremendously expert, but for the reason she loves me and I love her, we’re continuing and will continue with her always.

I adore doing it and whilst I’ll spend rest of my life learning and flourishing every possible style. There’s always less to learning.

A big thanks to my parents, my sister, my friends and my fiancé who helped me regain and rebuild everything.

Importance of learning a language

Learning a new language is a provision when we all are stepping in the life of globalization. In the 21st century, knowing a second language is not only beneficial but necessary for success in life. Studies show that it helps to improve a student’s cognitive function including improvement in memory function, enhancement in creative thinking, improvement in attitudes towards the target language and culture.

What is calligraphy

Calligraphy is a visual art form primarily focused on beautiful writing. It’s commonly created using specific tools such as pointed nib, broad edged nib, tapered nib, brush etc. This domain is becoming so vast day by day as different tools , different ideas of doing it are coming out so beautifully.

There are different types of calligraphy: traditional (roman capitals, gothic style, etc) & modern calligraphy (include copperplate, brush pen calligraphy etc), Faux calligraphy, Arabic calligraphy, Indian calligraphy, etc.

Nowadays, digital calligraphy is also booming.

Therefore it’s long way to go in this domain. If you really want to learn it, learning and understanding the proper terminology will help you immensely.
