How is the life of an entrepreneur different – Interview with Venuka Jaitly (contd)

life of an entrepreneur

Previously we saw how Venuka Jaitly gave us details about her home decor venture.

This time we put her through the paces about her thoughts on matters other than business.

As a professor in a college and a techie, you are isolated in a cubicle and supposed to interact with a computer terminal. But as an entrepreneur, your main strength becomes your marketing skills. How did you cope up with this change?

Yes, this is true. As a lecturer there is a syllabus and classes. At certain fixed time there will be an exam and paper correction. Plus all the usual responsibilities that a lecturer has to take on. There are certain constants in such a job. You are working for a brand. There are targets set by your boss or company. You are part of a machine which is moving in the forward direction. Your contribution makes a difference and the direction of the company decides your future and remuneration. There is a whole team of people working for you and the strength of the company and brand behind your actions.

Achieving targets is fun and it gives you a purpose. But those targets are set by someone else. Even in college, you syllabus and classes are already set by someone else. But in case of your own brand it is you and only you who has to set targets and achieve them too. That is the big difference.

As a single person entrepreneur you have to manage everything yourself. Margins are so thin in the beginning that you cannot afford to hire a team. Everyday is a balance between cost and profit. It does take a toll because you cannot meet your targets everyday. It is easy for others to set targets for you and when there is a proper ecosystem to support your work.

As I had brought out in my interview earlier, I did not have the choice of continuing my teaching job. That is how I chose this field but it has worked out for me. Yes it was difficult to cope up with the change but somehow I managed.

Short girl with tall ambitions. Please elaborate!

I get a lot of comments on my short height and not all of them are good. But like it goes for all short height girls. We have tall ambitions and we achieve them. Being short in height has its problems. As a lecturer it was a big challenge to stand tall among all the naturally tall students around me. But my knowledge and confidence helped me get through. Ever since I was small, I never allowed my height to get in the way. I believe that it is all what you think about yourself. Society unnecessary attaches these outer appearances with tags. Sharp nose, good features, fair complexion and so on. There is an entire economy catering for making your skin look fair. Now they have introduced a mens range to. Imagine men wanted to look fair! But the truth is that women cannot rely only on their external appearance. An education qualification, professional course and skill is a must for every woman to have an identity in the society.
