So what is the big deal about putting a tag on every relationship

relationship

We are the millennial! Well that should have been enough to understand that we do not play by your rules, we are definitely different. Whether I am ‘single’ or in a ‘committed relationship’, it is all very ‘complicated’, but I am clear and that is all that matters. So, do we need to put a tag on a relationship? And what exactly am I to tag it as? Let us consider a few deets before going any further-

1. What is a tag?

Most of the tags are not understood by any generation. What can be done here? In order for people to understand the various tags, you need to come out and explain. Putting a label is the expectations of others. It may be liberating and exciting for not putting a name to the relationship or even your own life choices. But it is better to express the fact and explain people who care for you the meaning of the label.

2. Fear of insecurity

The relationships nowadays are ‘make or break’ in jiffy! Thus it is very important to test the waters before putting a tag on it. We do not want to rush into anything and would rather go with the flow. We would like to recognize how we are feeling before jumping into the bandwagon of a label. When the relationship is more in a secure phase, maybe then it can be labeled.

3. Clarity in intentions

In any relationship, it is important that there is clarity from the beginning.  Youngsters just jump right into the relationship without clarifying any rules. Where the relationships are concerned, there should be always set boundaries. Express how you feel and what you would do and what you must not. It is always the clarity that makes a relationship run smoother! Often one partner assumes a set of rules while the other does not. Thus creating a rift, this might not be required.

4. Consider the situation-ship

The current situation, where ‘no tag is the best tag’ is a relationship of situation. It is in between single and committed. Where there are no rules and can be set by the partners. This is a point where you just enjoy the relationship and not what labels the society is going to put.

5. Having your cake and eating it too

So what is wrong in that? After investing emotionally into a relationship, the question will always arise- do you want more or is it enough? The millennial want to test the waters before diving right in.  What lies at the end of the road is not as important as the journey. Not everyone takes the path thinking about the destination. Sometimes it is just about the beautiful journey. And if the destination is visible, it will be dealt with it!

The label or the tags are just to show to the society about your choices in a relationship. It is better to be happy in a relationship with no tags than to be in a society and parents approved tagged relationship that makes you unhappy.

  1. Hmm.. I liked your take on the topic. The interpretation of relationships have undergone a complete transformation in recent years. I think circumstances and priorities have played their part to a great extent here.
