Interview with Rina Panchal of The Lettering String

Rina Panchal

Today we speak with Rina Panchal who launched her brand The Lettering String about a year ago with an innovative business idea.

What is Calligraphy?

From my point of view, Calligraphy is a mix of art and fine handwriting. It is an art of beautiful lettering. Calligraphy to me, in modern times, is the best means to bring back the trend of handwritten letters. It is an artistic skill. It is not a copy paste job. It requires practice, practice and more practice.

If you want to learn calligraphy, you have to begin from scratch. Calligraphy is not easy to learn. I began at the age of 13. I joined a calligraphy course and soon found it interesting. I began with Old English Style Calligraphy using cut nibs which remains my favorite even today.

That time, I was a school going girl and did not know what to do with calligraphy. I spend my spare time writing at the back of my books. So I guess I stayed in practice for all these years.

In your profile pics, you look like a college going girl. Are you?

No No, I am married with a daughter. I am a homemaker. I began professional calligraphy just a year back. Once while I was writing, my friends happened to see it and they encouraged me to pick up this skill as a profession. I am a party person, never had a career plan in mind. Friends and family encouraged me to open a social media account to showcase my work. I got some unexpected response which I attribute to my work.

My face has nothing to do with my work. My clients see my work and judge me by it.

What is your USP?

Calligraphy on paper is the norm. But I decided to go a step further. Paper gets lost easily and can’t be preserved for long. The inks fade and so do the colors. I do lettering on acrylic. It is long lasting, easy to send and can be framed. It can be added to a gift. You can use acrylic as a name plate or even a bookmark. Calligraphy on acrylic requires special inks which last long, a kind of permanent ink. I am always exploring the market to try out new paints and ink.

What are your future plans?

Right now I am overloaded with orders. So not focusing on anything else but just to grow the page, clients and audience. I want to grow my audience all over the world. I do have one thing somewhere in the corner of my mind, in the near future, to step in the world of digital calligraphy.

To all those wonderful people out there, if you have talent, take out time to flourish that talent and one day you will get what you want. Just don’t give up. If you keep thinking when will I take time to do my stuff, things will never happen. The world is out there is literally waiting for your talent and products.
