Revisiting age old concepts – gogreen

If we go into the history of festival of lights, we realise that it began with the lighting of a diya. Over the ages the concept and significance changed but the diya or lamp has always remained central to the house. Diyas were used to light up the house, to guide strangers on new paths and to illuminate the darkness. All the activities were finished before nightfall and we used to be early risers to work. So a diya was lit only in those homes who can afford it or during a special occasion.

Diyas lit with a cotton wick and desi ghee are totally organic and provide many benefits to the home and its residents. This age old knowledge is part of our culture. With so much passage of time, these concepts were passed from generation to generation. Women in the society are best keepers of these traditions and ready to explain them to their children. Why women can play this role. Because they have always played the role of a teacher in the house. It is due to the efforts of women that this knowledge has continue past so many years.

#gogreen is the need for today. Mental health and physical fitness is connected with being as close to nature as possible. Earthen lamps are easily available and environmental friendly. Use of desi ghee instead of bees wax has health benefits in its flames. Home made sweets and organic preparations will improve health and prepare our body for the coming winters. Let us spread the word and revive our culture and traditions.
